When will the consumer version of the Oculus Rift ship?
We haven’t announced an exact date or quarter for the consumer product’s release, but we promise we’re working tirelessly to make it available as soon as possible.
How much will the consumer version of the Oculus Rift cost?
We haven’t announced the price of the consumer product, but our goal is to deliver the highest quality virtual reality experience at a price that everyone can afford.
I’m not a developer. Should I buy a developer kit now or wait for the consumer version?
If you are asking this question, the answer is most likely “Wait”.
The consumer product will improve on almost every aspect of the developer kit, which is essentially an early prototype of the consumer version. This includes comfort, immersion, features, software support, etc… for the absolute best virtual reality experience possible.
If you absolutely must have one, please understand that the developer kits are more or less early prototypes of the consumer version and with very limited software/game support when they ship.
So if you’re not a developer or hardcore enthusiast, sit tight for now. We promise the consumer Rift will be worth the wait!
What type of input will I use to connect the Oculus Rift developer kit to my computer?
The Oculus Rift’s video input is DVI, though that can be converted to HDMI with an adapter. Converting the signal does not impact the performance of the Oculus Rift.
What are the minimum system requirements for the Oculus Rift developer kit?
The computer must have an HDMI or DVI video-out port. Note that VGA is unsupported at this time. Other than that, there are no minimum specifications, though the more powerful the computer, the better the experience will be. Any standard gaming computer should be sufficient to use the Oculus Rift.
Will the Oculus Rift developer kit work with my Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, or next gen console?
Not yet. The Oculus Rift developer kit will target PC-only. We hope to make the headset compatible with major consoles and mobile devices in the future.
Why is the resolution of the Oculus Rift developer kit 720p and not 1080p?
While it’s true that the developer kit uses a relatively low-resolution screen (1280×800) compared to large desktop monitors, we promise it delivers a compelling, immersive 3D VR experience. We also plan on improving the resolution for the consumer product. Stay tuned for more details!
Will the Oculus Rift work with Ouya?
Not yet, though we’ll keep everyone up to date on Ouya capability.
We’d love for the Oculus Rift to work with Ouya. There are a handful of technical requirements that need to be nailed down before we can announce official Ouya support, but we don’t foresee any major blockers.
What will the Oculus SDK include?
Libraries, headers, documentation, and samples for integrating the Oculus Rift with any game. We’ll also include out-of-the-box Unreal Engine and Unity integrations. The Oculus SDK will support PC (Windows) at launch.
When will the Oculus SDK be available?
The Oculus SDK will be available as soon as the developer kits ship (estimated April, 2013).
What are the main steps I will need to take to integrate Oculus Rift with my game?
The two main steps for integrating the Oculus Rift are:
(1) Integrate Rift motion tracking with your character’s view camera transformation, enabling looking around the world, and
(2) Implement stereoscopic 3D rendering and optical distortion adjustment that produces the correct left/right eye image on the device.
Our SDK will assist with both of these tasks, providing accelerometer and gyro data, screen size information, as well as pre-made shaders to simplify development and abstract away hardware details.
Can I wear glasses while using the Oculus Rift developer kit?
This really depends on the shape and size of the glasses. The developer kit is designed to sit as close to your eyes as possible which makes it a bit unfriendly for glasses. That said, we’ll do everything we can to make it as comfortable as possible for the developer kit and we have a lot of great ideas for supporting glasses in the consumer version (especially since huge portion of the Oculus team wears glasses every day!).
Can I use the Oculus Rift if I have poor/zero vision in one eye?
The Oculus Rift provides two independent images, one for each eye, so your view should match whatever you’re able to see in real life. We can’t guarantee it’ll work for everyone’s eyes; you’ll have to try the Oculus Rift for yourself to be sure.
Will the Oculus Rift cause eye strain after extended use?
The Oculus Rift causes very little eye strain, particularly compared to other standard displays or headmounts.
Normally, when you take a break from using a monitor or TV, the idea is to give your eyes a chance to focus and converge on a distant plane. This is a natural position of rest for your eyes.
With the Oculus Rift, your eyes are actually focused and converged in the distance at all times. It’s a pretty neat optical feature.
Will my favorite game work with the Oculus Rift?
Team Fortress 2 and Hawken are the only official Oculus-ready titles. We hope there are plenty of game developers who soon integrate Oculus technology into their upcoming titles and begin creating new games designed specifically for virtual reality!
Can I use the Oculus Rift developer kit for other tasks like watching movies, surfing the web, and programming?
Not yet, though we plan to continuously improve the feature set for the consumer version with feedback from developers.
The developer kit is designed specifically for an immersive VR gaming experience. Since Windows / OSX isn’t designed to be rendered inside the Oculus Rift, it’s not a trivial task to support content that has not yet been made Oculus-ready.
Does the Oculus Rift developer kit work with games that have existing stereo 3D support?
Not yet. Currently, game developers need to explicitly integrate support for the Oculus Rift. A proper Oculus integration is critical because you’re no longer looking at a flat screen– you feel as though you’re actually inside the virtual world.
Integrating the Oculus Rift also requires gameplay changes. Without proper game design changes like Oculus head-tracking, the virtual reality experience will not be compelling.
